Waterfalls and Lighthouses - Day 5

24Oct2020

Slept in for the first time on the trip and woke up at 7 in Astoria, grabbed coffee and a bite to eat. Started our journey down the Oregon Coast. Drove down to Ecola State Park, where we parked at the Indian Beach Day-Use parking and hiked the trail for a outlook at the Tilamook Rock Lighthouse.

It was a 4 mile loop, and would have been a moderate hike if it wasn’t the with switch backs (my favorite) and the muddy trail due to rain the night before. There is a campsite that you can stay near the lookout for the lighthouse, which is first come first serve. The campsite is mini lodging with four hunters quarter, and a single toilet. The lighthouse looks to be a quarter mile from the coast line.

We hopped in the car and headed to Tillamook Creamery for lunch time. Picked up some souvenirs for the family and got a little taste of heaven, with the best grilled cheese and tomato soup combo I have ever had.

After lunch was through, we went out to Yaquina Lighthouse for a quick walk out to a view point to capture the light house before rushing south to be overwhelmed by the waves crashing against the seascapes, and got a little to close for comfort to what is known as “Thor’s Well”. Took in the sunset and the thunderous waves.

Last spot for the day, was an active lighthouse shot - Hecta Lighthouse. There was very little light left in the sky, but was able to capture this shot of the lighthouse from a small pull out along 101. A night then spent in Salbasgeon. Total travel for the day - 222 Miles
